Why do numbers hold such great importance to us? Yes, I say ‘us’
because I fall within the scope of people who are more inclined to appreciate
quantity rather than quality of something. This is just a rant I want to put
out there.
Media
The large corporations, the reality stars and whoever benefiting
from television shows are concerned with the number of views they receive. This
quality of the show’s content is not as significance as the numbers it garners
from the population.
Therefore the aforementioned individuals are willing to do, produce
and create nonsensical degrading lifestyles , gather people who are more than
happy to play the roles and be a part of the television fame and follow through
with production/broadcast because at the end of the day, the views do matter.
Furthermore, they are not investing in these films which
lack so much substance and unfortunately tend to accurately reflect our current
state of society, but, are catering to the audience’s desires. We
complain that Tv is stupid or that there is nothing to watch when we flip
through the channels but the majority of the world out there, the number of the
people that no one person can contain, is facilitating it. They watch them and
enjoy them and they boost the views.
So therefore why shouldn’t the large
corporations give the people what they want? It is indeed true that they have
our best interest at heart.
Youtube
Ever since its inception, many persons have been doing
unthinkable tasks and enduring immense pain in order to accumulate views, to
make her/his video a viral success. Everyone wants fame but not everyone can have
it. And honestly, fame is not the most wonderful of fulfilling state in the
world. Just take a glimpse of the many lives of celebrities’ portrayed in the entertainment
news. Just take one glance.
Anhyhoo, back to the
point of people do anything and I mean anything
to gain recognition. Is it a form of rebellion, a cry for acceptance or just
utter stupidity? Yet, even though these persons are harming themselves, torturing
themselves the audience still extracts humour from it. I’ve done it as well but
after I’ve reflected on it, I wonder if I’m some type of sadist or if I’m so
sad/bored with my life that I have to find happiness in another’s demise.
On the other hand, I laugh because I can and I will. If you
are that inconsiderate towards your own well-being, to go to great risk to be
noticed or to stimulate humour, I find it funny, hence, I laugh.
However, at the end of the day it is the views that count. The
views stir motivation and inspiration and give the person a sense of confidence
(false sense of confidence, sometimes) that he/she is good at something and should
continue, so he/she release more videos and the views increase.
Instagram
I love this site because I’ve seen a lot of beautiful pictures,
art and watches. I’m obsessed with watches! Also I cannot stress enough the
innumerable selfies I’ve liked. They really are a lot of gorgeous people out
there. Hmm instagram, you post selfies and gain likes from random people when
you flood the image with hashtags. (I do that.)
But why does the number of likes matter so much to us? If no one likes
our photos, there is a sense of defeat, failure.
Otherwise, if we receive a lot of likes, beyond our
expectation, we’re elated! Now, again, these are random people, people we’ve
never met, never seen and possibly will never meet. They are liking our photos
and probably stealing them to make to contribute to his/her shrine of beauties
in his/her basement!
On that note, the majority of us (I hope) would not walk
into a crowded public setting and ask strangers to sift through our photos and
determine if they like them. No! That is because we are seated behind a computer
screen , we’re anonymous hence, more confident and bold. And deep down inside,
we want to be recognized too, we want some sort of fame, we want to be seen as
beautiful and we thrive off of the attention. Our self-confidence is dependent
on and thrives off of the number of likes we get. I may be wrong.
I think that’s the end of my rant.
Lol.
